Lindo Channel MTB/Cyclocross Results for Oct. 30th.......

Hi Everyone! So, yes, we had a rainy and somewhat muddy.....but not too muddy......Lindo Channel Cyclocross/Mountain Bike event tonight at 6pm. We had 8 riders take part in the event tonight - and a few spectators too. Tonight's race was just 6 laps, instead of the normal 8......and word of warning for future weeks - bring lights!! Even something cheap that can light your way is better than nothing. The rain made the course almost perfect for this event tonight, keeping the dust in check, but not creating tons of mud.

Okay, here are the results from tonight's event:

1. Nate Younie 32:00
2. Tom Embree 34:00
3. Greg DeGouveia
4. Dave Steindorf
5. Jeff Ochs
6. Charlie Pelton
7. Gino Zahnd
8. Roy Steves (Shoe mechanical)

Thursday Night Lindo Channel CX/MTB.........

Hi Everyone! This Thursday night - October 30th - at 6:00pm we will be having the Thursday Night Cyclocross/Mountain Bike race/ride! Thanks to James Plummer - he scouted out a great cross course in Lindo Channel here in Chico. The course has a little bit of everything - natural barriers, run-ups, single track, pavement, some rocks, a creek crossing, dirt and even a bike path! You can come out and ride it on your mountain bike or cyclocross bike - just whatever you might have. As of now, it is still light outside at 6:00pm.......but by 7:00pm it is dark........so lights are highly recommened, especially as we get further into Fall and Winter. Last week's event was great - looked like a TON of fun out there!!! And you don't have to "race" it - just come out and ride!!!

RAIN does NOT cancel - it just makes it more fun!!!

The Starting Point for the ride/race will be at the entrance to the bike path where Sheridan and Sherman Avenues meet, on East Lindo Avenue. See Map of Starting Point here:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Starting-Point-for-Thursday-Night-Cyclocross

We're looking at anywhere between 8 and 10 laps for this event. James will show you the course on the warm-up lap......but we'll have cones and caution tape up too to remind you which direction to go on the course.

This promises to be a fun and very active event - hope you can make it out there!!

Sycamore Channel Cyclocross/Mountain Bike Results........

Hi Everyone! So, we had a fun ride this morning out at the 1st ever Sycamore Channel Mountain Bike/Cyclocross event. 15 riders showed up for this one, and we had a few spectators too! The Sycamore Channel Long Course this morning was 2 miles in length, and we did 5 laps......each lap included 4 creek crossings(no water in the channel.......yet), a few handmade barrier sections, and some steep banks to get up and over. But, the word of the day was FUN - and that's what we had! Well.........Fun....and the second word of the day was FLAT! There were a few flats out there too - good idea to stock up on some flat protection slime or something.

Overall, the event went very well, and was a lot of fun - and a great workout with minimal time. David Albrecht was the 1st place finisher today with a time of 37:41. Jeff Baylor was second - and let me tell you - it was a blast to watch Jeff BUNNY HOP over the 56cm high barriers on the course! Amazing! And Sandra Barton came in 1st in the Women's division!

Thank you all for coming out to this one - I really appreciate you coming out for this event!

A HUGE thank you goes out to Dave Steindorf, Denny McKenney and Caryn Jones for helping out with the race this morning - thank you so much!!

We'll be back out on the Sycamore Channel course on Tuesday night. However, we will be using the "Short" course Tuesday night, which is only .7 miles long......it will include hand-made barriers(lower than the 56cm ones!!) and two creek crossings per lap. We'll start out with a 12 lap event, for a total of 8.4 miles - with the main objective just to HAVE FUN, and get a good little workout in after work or school, and work on a little bike-handling skills. The race/ride will start at 6:00pm at the same start location - on Sycamore Channel, directly across the street from 695 Eaton Road(MUST enter through the gates on Eaton Road or Hicks Lane). Lights are HIGHLY recommended - for this course, you don't need anything too high-powered......just something basic will more than suffice. The Bikely.com map of the Tuesday course is here:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Sycamore-Channel-CX-Course-1

And, again, Sycamore Channel runs between Cohasset Road and Hicks Lane......just north of Eaton Road......look for me at the Start/Finish location up on the levee(with the Orange Cones).

And, yes, we'll be out doing the Lindo Channel Cyclocross/MTB event on Thursday night at 6:00pm as well!

Okay, here are the results from this morning's ride/race:

1. David Albrecht 37:41
2. Jeff Baylor
3. Roy Steves (he even flatted during the race, fixed it....and still got 3rd!)
4. Ross Nayduch
5. Dave Steindorf
6. Jeff Ochs
7. Paul Price (flatted during race, fixed it and got back in)
8. Brooks Biertumpfel

AND - The Hill Climb Series Information is below:

Hi Everyone! So, we are doing a Fall/Winter Hill Climb Time Trial Series this year in Chico, with the climbs and dates below. There was a similar Series done years ago here in Chico - 1981 or 1982 - by Tom Devol and Jeff Smith, who owned Cyclesport bike shop at the time. And, of course, now there is that almost-famous Low Key Hillclimb Series in the Bay Area every fall. In any case, we decided to have our own and revive the old Chico Series.......with a couple of route changes. Below is a list of the tentative events with dates. It should be mentioned that these dates could change depending upon Galland Cross, the Cutty Series and Tyler Cross dates this fall/winter. And, of course......the weather! Rain will not cancel - but snow and ice will.

How does it work??? Below are each of the 10 Hillclimbs in the Series. Each climb has been given a rank based upon feedback from some well-known riders in the area (and climbers in particular - yes, I know - everyone is different, but this is just a low-key have-fun series, so no big whoop). Category 1 climbs are the hardest, with Category 3 being.......let's not say easiest.......let's say........not quite as hard as Category 1! Points will be awarded to the top finishers in each Hill Climb TT - the folks with the most points at the end of the Series, wins the overall title. The Point Breakdown is as follows:

Hors Climb = 40-36-34-32-30-28-26-24-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1
Cat. 1 Climb = 30-26-24-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1 (In other words, 1st place in a Cat. 1 TT gets 30 points, 2nd place gets 26 and on down the line - every person who competes in the event gets at least 1 point).
Cat. 2 Climb = 24-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1(The winner of a Cat. 2 climb gets 24 points, 2nd place gets 20 points and on and on.)
Cat. 3 Climb = 20-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1

And here are the Time Trial courses, the tentative dates, and their listed difficulty category:

Cohasset to Store (from Nicalog) - Sept. 7th - Cat. 2 - COMPLETED!
Forest Ranch (Chico Velo event) - Sept. 27th - Cat. 1 - COMPLETED!
Honey Run Rd. (from Covered Bridge) - Oct. 11th - Cat. 1 - COMPLETED!
Pentz Road (from Spring Valley School) - Oct. 19th - Cat. 2 - COMPLETED!
Cohasset to Gravel (from Nicalog Road) - Oct. 25th - Hors Category - COMPLETED!
Centerville (from Covered Bridge to the gravel) - Nov. 1st - Cat. 3
Neal Road - Nov. 15th - Cat. 3
Table Mountain (Wildflower Side) - Nov. 22nd - Cat. 1
Clark Road (from intersection with Durham Pentz) - Dec. 13th - Cat. 2
Humboldt Road - Dec. 27th - Cat. 3

10 Climbs, approximately 18,000 feet of climbing in total, held over a 4-month period from September through December. Consistency will be key in winning the Overall Series.

Participant Categories - the following categories will be offered for the Series event(see below) The winner in each category will receive the Chico Hillclimb Champion Trophy, along with Bragging Rights.........as well as any stuff we can get to give away as prizes:

Category "A" Men
Category "B" Men
Women's Category
Clydesdale Men (No no, I'm not gonna weigh you - just show up and tell me and I will give you a yes or no answer)
Mens 50+ Category
Womens 50+ Category

As usual, sandbaggers are strongly discouraged. Also, if there's a lot of folks in one particular category, we may split those up into sub-categories, if needed. In turn, if nobody - or very few folks are in one category, we may eliminate it and add an additional category where the numbers allow it.

This Series is FREE - so come on out and take advantage of some, or all, of these Time Trials this fall and winter! Hope to see you out there - and I will have more details and information as we get closer to the events.

We'll be out at the Sycamore Channel MTB/Cyclocross course this Sunday:

Hi Everyone! So, this month's Table Mountain Road Race has been postponed.......to next March! So, in its place, we are holding the Sycamore Channel Mountain Bike/Cyclcross Challenge on Sunday - October 26th. Registration will open at 8:45am, with the race/ride starting at 9:00am. The Start/Finish Line is located on the trail at Sycamore Channel in north Chico(in between Hicks Lane and Cohasset Road.....near the Chico Airport), almost directly across the street from my house(yes, I did this one out of convenience.....sorry about that!!). I live at 695 Eaton Road here in Chico - pink house next to Anchor Inn Storage between Godman Avenue and Morseman Avenue.......if you are at the house and look north, you'll see the Start/Finish location across the field. Also, you'll see me out on the Channel trail early in the AM. If you want to drive, you can park at my place - either front or back.......but better yet, ride your bike!!!

The Bikely.com map of this course can be found here - it is about 2 miles in length, includes 4 creek crossings per lap, some natural run-ups, dirt, rocks, water....and hopefully some man-made barriers on the straight sections:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Sycamore-Channel-CX-Course-2

Some photos of the Hicks Lane creek crossing can be found here:

The location to ENTER the Sycamore Channel area from Eaton Road is here:

and the location to ENTER the Sycamore Channel area from Hicks Lane is here:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Entry-2-to-Sycamore-course

This race/ride will be 5 laps - we'll see how this first one goes before we decide to do anymore.......or add or subtract....or eliminate entirely.....for this event. If it goes okay, there are options to extend or change this course.

Anyway, hope you can make it out there this Sunday morning!!

Sycamore Channel Mountain Bike/Cyclocross Challenge this Sunday........

You'll see me out on the Channel trail early in the AM.

Some photos of the Hicks Lane creek crossing can be found here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/chicovelo/sets/72157608252635877/

The location to ENTER the Sycamore Channel area from Eaton Road is here:

and the location to ENTER the Sycamore Channel area from Hicks Lane is here:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Entry-2-to-Sycamore-course

This race/ride will be 5 laps - we'll see how this first one goes before we decide to do anymore.......or add or subtract....or eliminate entirely.....for this event. If it goes okay, there are options to extend or change this course.

Anyway, hope you can make it out there this Sunday morning!!

Thursday Night Cyclocross/MTB this Thursday.....

Hi Everyone! This Thursday night - October 23rd - at 6:00pm we will be having the Thursday Night Cyclocross/Mountain Bike race/ride!

The Starting Point for the ride/race will be at the entrance to the bike path where Sheridan and Sherman Avenues meet, on East Lindo Avenue. See Map of Starting Point here:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Starting-Point-for-Thursday-Night-Cyclocross

We're looking at anywhere between 6 and 8 laps for this event. James will show you the course on the warm-up lap......but we'll have cones and caution tape up too to remind you which direction to go on the course.

This promises to be a fun and very active event - hope you can make it out there!!

Bigger climb this Saturday........

This Saturday - October 25th - is Race #5 in the Chico Hill Climb Time Trial Series - the vicious Hors Category climb to the Cohasset Gravel. There has been one slight change in this particular Time Trial for Saturday - the Start Line for this event will be in our usual Cohasset TT spot on Nicalog Road.....NOT Keefer Road. So, the Cohasset Gravel Time Trial course will go from Nicalog Road up to the gravel. The gravel is about 4.5 miles past the Cohasset Store (stay on Cohasset Road, NOT Vilas Road). This climb is approximately 9.1 miles in length.......and climbs approximately 2,900 feet. The Bikely.com map of the Cohasset Gravel Time Trial course is here:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Cohasset-Gravel-TT

Registration for this event will open at 8:15am at the corner of Nicalog Road and Cohasset Road(in the dirt parking lot) - the first rider will be off at 9:01am and we will go in 1-minute intervals.

Hope to see you out there on Saturday!

25th -
Hors Category

Old School.....New School.......

I'll tell ya, I hate politics - I really do. But when you combine politics into the cycling world.....geesh......that makes me barf.

We've got a quite a few old school folks riding around these parts. In a way, I love these folks - they're full of history and knowledge and experience - and I, myself, am part of that group too. But one thing that I accept - and which seems to get me into a lot of trouble now and again with certain old school folks - is that I fully and wholly embrace the new school rider/ideas. There are certain old school folks in these parts who don't like this - and don't embrace it. They feel it's a "challenge" to their "rightful" spot in the local cycling circles. They feel threatened. They don't like it.

To me, this is complete bullshit. How in the hell can new cycling folks and new cycling groups in your own town hurt? It can't - we're all in "this" together, for crissakes. It's a fukkin' recreational sport/activity/community we're in! And we're in it together. Yes, I am one of those Fred dorks who waves at everyone on a bicycle - I feel like they're my family. I don't need the elitist attitudes of the old days......and I don't need to view every new ride, rider, club, group, coalition or whathaveyou as being a "threat" or a stupid idea. They're an addition to a beautiful activity we're all involved in and I welcome them with open arms.

Yes, I have old school blood in me. But, so what? I love cycling - and the more people doing it, the better. Simple as that. As for politics - leave that to the politicians.

25th - Hors Category

Pentz Road Time Trial Results.......

Hi Everyone! We had another great turn-out today for this morning's Pentz Road Time Trial - thank you all for coming out to this one! We had 29 riders take part in this event - Race #4 in the 10-race Chico Hill Climb Time Trial Series. This course was about 5.8 miles in length and included about 1100 feet of climbing up Pentz Road to Paradise.

The top photo is the Start Line.....and the bottom photos is the Finish Line up in Paradise, California.

I would like to thank Geno Gruber and Elizabeth Brent for helping out with the event this morning - thank you so much for your help and cheering on the riders!! That was great, and very appreciated!!

Below, you will find the combined results for the Pentz Road Time Trial - I will send out the updated Overall Standings for the Chico Hill Climb Time Trial Series a bit later today.

Next Saturday - October 25th - is Race #5 in this Hill Climb Series - the vicious Hors Category climb to the Cohasset Gravel. There has been one slight change in this particular Time Trial next Saturday - the Start Line for this event will be in our usual Cohasset TT spot on Nicalog Road.....NOT Keefer Road. This climb is approximately 9.1 miles in length.......and climbs approximately 2,900 feet. The Bikely.com map of the Cohasset Gravel Time Trial course is here:

Honey Run Road Clean-up.......

Hi Everyone! So, this morning was the Honey Run Road Clean-up - an event which the Chico Velo Cycling Club takes part in each year to help keep one of our greatest climbs clean. And, it looks like we got a ton of garbage off of Honey Run this morning, and just down of the side of the road too.......I mean, literally - at least one ton of garbage!!! Although this is one of those not-so-fun jobs, we still had a GREAT crew out there working this event - and that made it fun and made the time fly. So, with that said I want to give a HUGE and GINORMOUS Thank You to our volunteers this morning who took time out of their Saturday to help keep our Honey Run Road hillclimb clean. Thanks goes out to:

Byron Fountain
Cerena Storm
Neal Bordenave
Mark Bloom
Gordon Masur
Bill Brent
Elizabeth Brent
John D'ewart
Andy "Lawrence Livermore"

and all the other many many volunteers from the community who came out to help with the Butte Creek Canyon Clean-up today - thank you all!!

And........to those other 8 folks who should have been out there, but weren't.......shame on you.

"Yeah, you may have saved him, but........"

Warning.....Friday Rant ahead:

I love cycling. I mean, anyone who knows me or reads this here bloggy thing or sees my Flickr Pics or reads my Facebook page knows I love cycling. I grew up in it, I was raised in it, I have lived most of my 40-year-old life involved in cycling in some way or another.......primarily right here in Chico, California. And you know, there's not much that can put a damper on my enthusiasm for this sport. You might see or be involved in a crash now and again that puts a dent in your motivation for it......but overall, you still love it. Drug scandals and crazy drivers and everything else......but we still do this sport/activity we love.

But I'll tell you the one thing that really does squish my excitement for this great activity. It's people who are so anal, they can't see what others are doing to help. It's like, Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon........his student is watching Bruce's hand pointing up to the moon.....but Bruce slaps him and says "Don't think; feel. It's like a finger pointing away to the moon. Don't concentrate on the finger, or you will miss all that heavenly glory." It's like saying to someone "Yeah, you may have saved that guy from dying with your CPR skills......but in the process, you busted one of the buttons on his shirt."

Fuk. Are you kidding me?? THAT is what you are going to complain to me about?? Please....get a perspective on things. Look around you - do you see what is going on in Chico cycling at the moment?? It's called a "resurgence".....look it up.

So, yeah, I busted one of the buttons on the shirt. BFD.

Okay, Friday rant over - thanx for letting me vent!!

Cross Time in Chico.......

Hi Everyone! So, this Thursday night - October 16th - at 6:00pm we will be starting the Thursday Night Cyclocross race/ride! As of now, it is still light outside at 6:00pm.......but by 7:00pm it is dark........so lights are recommened, especially as we get further into Fall and Winter.

The Starting Point for the ride/race will be at the entrance to the bike path where Sheridan and Sherman Avenues meet, on East Lindo Avenue. See Map of Starting Point here:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Starting-Point-for-Thursday-Night-Cyclocross

We're looking at anywhere between 5 and 10 laps for this event - but we'll see how this first race goes. James will show you the course on the warm-up lap......but we'll have cones and caution tape up too to remind you which direction to go on the course. I will be scoring the event at the Start/Finish location at the bike path.

This promises to be a fun and very active event - hope you can make it out there!!

There are 7 races left in the Series - the next race will be the Pentz Road Time Trial on Sunday, October 19th.......next weekend! Pentz Road is classified as a Category 2 climb, so the winner will get 24 points....and on from there.

**One Note - The Cohasset To The Gravel Hill Climb Time Trial (from Keefer Road) on Saturday, October 25th has been officially moved to an Hors Category Climb. This means that the point breakdown for that one climb will look like this:

11th - Cat. 1
Pentz Road (from Spring Valley School) - Oct. 19th - Cat. 2
Cohasset to Gravel (from Keefer Road) - Oct. 25th - Cat. 1
