Chad Gerlach....back in action......

Amore e Vita goes American - from www.cyclingnews.com

Although still based in Tuscany, Italy, the Amore e Vita-McDonald's team will be registered as a continental team from the US in 2009 and no longer in Poland. Team manager Cristian Fanini has finalized a multi-national 18-man roster including Ukrainian sprint ace Yuriy Metlushenko and former CSC rider and Tour de l'Avenir time trial winner Christian Müller from Germany.
The team will also include American Chad Gerlach, who will make a return to the sport after having declined into drug addiction and homelessness. His story was the subject of a US television programme called "Intervention." Following the show, where troubled people are helped into a recovery regime, Gerlach began training again. The 35-year-old was previously off the bike for six years.

Also joining the team, according to La Nazione, is Roberto Gaggioli as a third directeur sportif.
2009 Amore & Vita roster: Alexey Bauer (Rus), Vladislav Borisov (Rus), Matt Brandt (USA), Phil Cortes (Can), Jaroslaw Dabrowski (Pol), Richard England (Aus), Peter Femal (USA), Graziano Gasparre (Ita), Chad Gerlach (USA), Fabio Gilioli (Ita), Sergey Grechyn (Ukr), Philip Mamos (Ger), Yuriy Metlushenko (Ukr), Nathan Miller (USA), Christian Müller (Ger), Soren Nissen (Den), Volodymyr Starchyk (Ukr), Andrew Talanski (USA).

CHICO-OREGON GULCH(gravel)-PARADISE-CHICO = 75 miles
Saturday, December 6th, 2008 9:30 AM One Mile Recreation Area
This is turning into the classic ride going over Table Mountain then looping back on a mean dirt climb before the final climb into Paradise. From Chico we roll past Butte College and hit the foothills up to Cherokee Rd. We climb and descend Cherokee all the way across Table Mountain before backtracking a mile or so to the start of the dirt on Oregon Gulch Rd. This five-mile stretch of good gravel has a few ups and downs before a steep kicker up to the first KOM of the weekend. Descend back down Cherokee and head straight up Pentz Rd into Paradise for KOM # 2. Work our way through town and descend Neal Rd for a sprint before 99, cross 99, and finish with a second sprint on Chico-Oroville HWY.5:00 PM. Dinner at Woodstocks. Pizza, beer, ride tales, Sundays route and prizes?

FIXED GEAR CHALLENGE #1: PENTZ ROAD ~ 45 miles
Sunday, December 7th, 2008 10:00 AM One Mile Recreation Area
Keep the muscle tension high with this brute of a climb on the FIXED GEAR! Same roads as Saturday minus the Cherokee/Oregon Gulch loop with the climb up Pentz as KOM #3 and the descent down Neal Road for a couple more sprints. All bikes are welcome but the glory goes to thoes who suffer on the fixie!

Notes: These rides are organized for fun(?) and are open to all who are willing to try. Some rides utilize out and back portions and regrouping is encouraged! Road bikes with sturdy tires will be fine for both rides. We will try to have a support vehicle(s) but please come prepared, ride with a partner and have a plan to get home. Please dress WARM and bring plenty of food, water and supplies and take responsibility for yourselves. We will have ride cards with the route, but there will be minimal course markings, no road closures, aid stations or coffee stops, just dogs, squirrels, pickup trucks, and a bunch of bikers on a sweet ride in the cuts! For more info on the Cutty Series or other Chico area rides contact Aren Timmel at arentimmel@sbcglobal.net .

AND - The Hill Climb Series Information is below:

Hi Everyone! So, we are doing a Fall/Winter Hill Climb Time Trial Series this year in Chico, with the climbs and dates below. There was a similar Series done years ago here in Chico - 1981 or 1982 - by Tom Devol and Jeff Smith, who owned Cyclesport bike shop at the time. And, of course, now there is that almost-famous Low Key Hillclimb Series in the Bay Area every fall. In any case, we decided to have our own and revive the old Chico Series.......with a couple of route changes. Below is a list of the tentative events with dates. It should be mentioned that these dates could change depending upon Galland Cross, the Cutty Series and Tyler Cross dates this fall/winter. And, of course......the weather! Rain will not cancel - but snow and ice will.

How does it work??? Below are each of the 10 Hillclimbs in the Series. Each climb has been given a rank based upon feedback from some well-known riders in the area (and climbers in particular - yes, I know - everyone is different, but this is just a low-key have-fun series, so no big whoop). Category 1 climbs are the hardest, with Category 3 being.......let's not say easiest.......let's say........not quite as hard as Category 1! Points will be awarded to the top finishers in each Hill Climb TT - the folks with the most points at the end of the Series, wins the overall title. The Point Breakdown is as follows:

Hors Climb = 40-36-34-32-30-28-26-24-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1
Cat. 1 Climb = 30-26-24-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1 (In other words, 1st place in a Cat. 1 TT gets 30 points, 2nd place gets 26 and on down the line - every person who competes in the event gets at least 1 point).
Cat. 2 Climb = 24-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1(The winner of a Cat. 2 climb gets 24 points, 2nd place gets 20 points and on and on.)
Cat. 3 Climb = 20-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1

And here are the Time Trial courses, the tentative dates, and their listed difficulty category:

Cohasset to Store (from Nicalog) - Sept. 7th - Cat. 2 - COMPLETED!
Forest Ranch (Chico Velo event) - Sept. 27th - Cat. 1 - COMPLETED!
Honey Run Rd. (from Covered Bridge) - Oct. 11th - Cat. 1 - COMPLETED!
Pentz Road (from Spring Valley School) - Oct. 19th - Cat. 2 - COMPLETED!
Cohasset to Gravel (from Nicalog Road) - Oct. 25th - Hors Category - COMPLETED!
Centerville (from Covered Bridge to the gravel) - Nov. 1st - Cat. 3 - COMPLETED!
Neal Road - Nov. 15th - Cat. 3 - COMPLETED!
Table Mountain (Wildflower Side) - Nov. 22nd - Cat. 1 - COMPLETED!
Clark Road (from intersection with Durham Pentz) - Dec. 13th - Cat. 2
Humboldt Road - Dec. 27th - Cat. 3

10 Climbs, approximately 18,000 feet of climbing in total, held over a 4-month period from September through December. Consistency will be key in winning the Overall Series.

Participant Categories - the following categories will be offered for the Series event(see below) The winner in each category will receive the Chico Hillclimb Champion Trophy, along with Bragging Rights.........as well as any stuff we can get to give away as prizes:

Category "A" Men
Category "B" Men
Women's Category
Clydesdale Men (No no, I'm not gonna weigh you - just show up and tell me and I will give you a yes or no answer)
Mens 50+ Category
Womens 50+ Category

As usual, sandbaggers are strongly discouraged. Also, if there's a lot of folks in one particular category, we may split those up into sub-categories, if needed. In turn, if nobody - or very few folks are in one category, we may eliminate it and add an additional category where the numbers allow it.

This Series is FREE - so come on out and take advantage of some, or all, of these Time Trials this fall and winter! Hope to see you out there - and I will have more details and information as we get closer to each of the events.

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Table-Mountain-TT

This is a Category 1 climb of about 5.4 miles and about 1,650 feet of climbing(rough estimates). Registration will open at 8:15am, with the first rider going off at 9:01am....and we will go in 1-minute intervals. Everyone is welcome to come on out and give it a shot! The Start location for this event is in Oroville on Cherokee Road(see map) where it crosses the channel......just past La Colina Drive......but before you get to Thompson Flat Cemetary Road.

22nd - Cat. 1

As usual, sandbaggers are strongly discouraged. Also, if there's a lot of folks in one particular category, we may split those up into sub-categories, if needed. In turn, if nobody - or very few folks are in one category, we may eliminate it and add an additional category where the numbers allow it.

This Series is FREE - so come on out and take advantage of some, or all, of these Time Trials this fall and winter! Hope to see you out there - and I will have more details and information as we get closer to each of the events.

The Butte Hill Climb Time Trial Series.........

Hi Everyone! So, we are starting a NEW Hill Climb Series this next Spring - The Butte Hill Climb Time Trial Series in Spring 2009 will visit various parts of Butte County, with the climbs and dates below. There was a similar Series done years ago here in Chico - 1981 or 1982 - by Tom Devol and Jeff Smith, who owned Cyclesport bike shop at the time. And, of course, now there is that almost-famous Low Key Hillclimb Series in the Bay Area every fall. In any case, we decided to have our own and revive the old Hill Climb Series.......with a few route changes. Below is a list of the tentative events with dates. It should be mentioned that these dates could change depending upon other events going on. And, of course......the weather! Rain will NOT cancel - but snow and ice will.

Note: The Chico Hill Climb Time Trial Series will be back in the Fall/Winter of 2009 - starting in September! The Butte Series will go from January 1st, 2009 to May 31st, 2009. This Series follows a slow progression over 5 months - starting with the Category 3 climbs early to get your legs ready........and ending with the Category 1 climbs in May. This should help you take advantage of those springtime miles!!

How does it work??? Below are each of the 10 Hillclimbs in the Butte Hill Climb Time Trial Series. Points will be awarded to the top finishers in each Hill Climb TT - the folks with the most points at the end of the Series, wins the overall title in their respective categories........along with the coveted Butte County Hill Climb Champion Trophy.

EVERY competitor who starts and finishes an event receives an additonal 3 points PER event.

The Point Breakdown for placings is as follows:

Night Circuit Mountain Biking..........

Hi Everyone!! So, I know that quite a few of you will be riding the 24-hour
mountain bike race in Oroville next weekend. To get you ready, we're going to
have a night mountain bike/cyclocross bike ride/race this Tuesday night at the
Floral Avenue Long-Course(all off-road, but does have one bike path). This
Circuit is 2.2 miles in length, does not include barriers or run-ups and is
beginner-friendly. There are a couple of sections of mud(not too bad)........but
that makes it more fun! The course is primarily flat. Notes - bring a light and
your helmet......and either your mountain bike or cyclocross bike. The event
will be 40 minutes PLUS 1 lap. I will give you the elapsed time as we go
along......as well as the 1-to-go signal. This is a great course if you are
still trying to get use to using lights at night on your mountain
bike........two sections of the course have some street lightning as
well..........the rest is dark. Cones will mark the turns.

Registration will open at 5:45pm - and the ride/race will start at 6:00pm. I
will be on the field at the intersection of East Lassen Avenue and Floral Avenue
for registration/start.....near the bike path. The Start/Finish is on the
northwest corner of the field........at the corner of East Lassen and Floral
Avenue.

Rain does NOT cancel.

A map of the course can be found here on Bikely.com:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Floral-Avenue-Long-Course-3

Hope to see you out there!!

Night MTB/Cross.....

What a GREAT night out there Thursday night for mountain biking and cyclocross. Our Lindo Channel event was truly awesome tonight.......my only wish is that more riders would take part in it. Last night, the weather was great - not cold, not warm, no wind, moon lighting the way, the course was slightly damp but not muddy......it was just a great night to be out there. So, in honor of that, I extended the race....and made it a 55-minute event tonight. But.......only 4 riders took part......and 3 spectators!

Here are the results:

1. Tim Olson
2. Roy Steves
3. Ross Nayduch
4. David Kyle

I know the weather won't be like this for the remaining weeks.....but it was great for last night.

One bad part - after the race, when I was out on the course picking up all the cones, there was a BAD 4-car crash right next to the race course. Pretty vicious wreck. Not sure of the injuries, but both lanes of traffic were blocked - lots of fire engines, police, ambulances and such. Not a good way to end the night.

Thursday Night Cyclocross/Mountain Bike Event is ON.......

Hi Everyone! This Thursday night - November 6th - at 6:00pm we will be having the Thursday Night Cyclocross/Mountain Bike race/ride! Thanks to James Plummer - he scouted out a great cross course in Lindo Channel here in Chico. The course has a little bit of everything - natural barriers, run-ups, single track, pavement, some rocks, a creek crossing, dirt and even a bike path! You can come out and ride it on your mountain bike or cyclocross bike - just whatever you might have. As of now, it is pitch dark at 6:00pm.........so lights and helmets are mandatory. Last week's event was great - looked like a TON of fun out there, even in the rain!!! And you don't have to "race" it - just come out and ride!!! We just do this stuff for fun(but the lights and helmets will help you have more fun!!)

RAIN does NOT cancel - it just makes it more muddy!

The Starting Point for the ride/race will be at the entrance to the bike path where Sheridan and Sherman Avenues meet, on East Lindo Avenue. See Map of Starting Point here:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Starting-Point-for-Thursday-Night-Cyclocross

We're looking at a 40-minute PLUS 3 laps event. I will give you elapsed time as you come by - and obviously, the 3-to-go signal.......just like the Tuesday night Criteriums at the airport. James will show you the course on the warm-up lap......but we'll have cones and caution tape up to remind you which direction to go on the course.

This promises to be a fun and very active event - hope you can make it out there!!

OH - last night's event at Wildwood CX/MTB was a kick - the course was really muddy.......but we had six riders take part in the event. I used glow sticks to light the way a bit - but didn't help as much with all of the mud! Thank you all for coming out to that one - it looked like a blast! We will be back out there next Tuesday on the long-course(new course). Here are the results from last night:

1. Joe Shelburne
2. Charlie Pelton
3. Chas Pelton
4. Tony Gomes
5. Bill Travers
DNF - Jeff Ochs(knee mechanical)

The pic - that's my cat Cricket.....she helps me with course design....so any complaints should be directed at her. Warning - she's vicious!!

See - it's a good thing to have a guy with OCD who wants to put on cycling events in your local area!!

Prizes: Definitely Trophies; probably some t-shirts; product prizes, Sierra Nevada beer and maybe money. And, as always, the "Rodney" events are always FREE to enter. USA Cycling rules do apply for most events. And hey, if you're in the Chico area, you pretty much have your pick of events to do locally. A HUGE thank you goes out to the Chico Corsa Cycling Club, the Chico Velo Cycling Club and Sierra Nevada Brewery for letting me do all these events and helping me with some of the expenses associated with them - without your help and support, they just would not be happening.

AND - this is just the competitive side......the actual riding schedule for Chico is huge!!
