Saturday September 26th, 2009
XC Race at 8:00 am mass- start!

Think you’re up for Northern California’s most technical cross country course? The Bidwell Bump is a punishing course that will leave you humbled!
Pro/Expert Course:
The race will start below the cross, in the parking lot of the North Rim Trail. The race starts with a 4 mile climb up North Rim to the start of B-trail. B-trail is a technical 1.5 mile rocky-switchback descent that goes down the canyon to the park road. Go left at the park road and proceed for 1 mile till the road ends. At this point take the single track to the creek crossing and climb up to 10 Mile-House Road. Take a right on the fire road. 10 Mile-House Road is a short but grueling 900ft climb. Near the top, take a right at Guardians Trail. Descend down Guardian Trail for approximately 1.5 miles to the Bloody Pin trail entrance. This is the trail that defines Bidwell Park, rocky and technical! Take Bloody Pin trail till if T’s into South Rim and take a left. Make your way down South Rim till you reach the notorious hike-a-bike section, “tennis-ball hill.” Half a mile after “tennis-ball hill” there will be a “Y” in the trail, verve left and be prepared for the last technical descent to the finish. The finish is located in the open area south of the golf course.

Hi Everyone! So, Race #2 is coming up in the 2009 Chico Hill Climb Time Trial Series - and this one is a classic! This Sunday - September 27th - The Chico Velo Cycling Club will be hosting the Forest Ranch Hill Climb Time Trial - see the Event Highlight below! ALSO - I still need a Starter to help me start the riders off at the bottom of the hill - if you can help me, it's an additional 5-point bonus in the Series - and you can still race the Time Trial(just be the last one to start!).

Forest Ranch Hill Climb Time Trial! Join us on Sunday, September 27th for this annual Chico Velo Time Trial! Registration will open at 8:30am at the corner of Hwy. 32 and Bruce Road. First rider will start at 9:01AM and we will go in 1-minute intervals. Start line is at Bruce and Hwy. 32. This is a FREE event, so come on out to give it a shot. A case of Sierra Nevada if your time beats your age! However, you MUST be a Chico Velo Cycling Club member in order to win the beer. How do I join Chico Velo?? You can download an application form by clicking on this link:

http://www.chicovelo.org/pdf/membership.pdf

or visiting www.ChicoVelo.org.

This is a long-standing Hill Climb Time Trial here in Chico - and counts as a Category 1 climb in the 2009 Chico Hill Climb TT Series.

Hope to see you out there this Sunday!

2009 Chico Hill Climb Time Trial Series:

Hi Everyone! So, we are doing a Fall/Winter Hill Climb Time Trial Series this year in Chico, with the climbs and dates below. There was a similar Series done years ago here in Chico - 1981 or 1982 - by Tom Devol and Jeff Smith, who owned Cyclesport bike shop at the time. And, of course, now there is that almost-famous Low Key Hillclimb Series in the Bay Area every fall. In any case, we decided to have our own and revive the old Chico Series.......with a couple of route changes. Below is a list of the tentative events with dates. It should be mentioned that these dates could change depending upon Galland Cross, the Cutty Series and other event dates this fall/winter. And, of course......the weather! Rain will not cancel - but snow and ice will.

How does it work???

Below are each of the 10 Hillclimbs in the Series. Each climb has been given a rank based upon feedback from some well-known riders in the area (and climbers in particular - yes, I know - everyone is different, but this is just a low-key have-fun series, so no big whoop). Hors Category & Category 1 climbs are the hardest, with Category 3 being.......let's not say easiest.......let's say........not quite as hard as Category 1! Points will be awarded to the top finishers in each Hill Climb Time Trial - the folks with the most points at the end of the Series, wins the overall title. The Point Breakdown is as follows:

Hors Category Climb = 40-36-34-32-30-28-26-24-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1-1
Cat. 1 Climb = 30-26-24-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1 (In other words, 1st place in a Cat. 1 TT gets 30 points, 2nd place gets 26 and on down the line - every person who competes in the event gets at least 1 point).
Cat. 2 Climb = 24-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1(The winner of a Cat. 2 climb gets 24 points, 2nd place gets 20 points and on and on.)
Cat. 3 Climb = 20-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1

Also, EVERY competitor who starts and finishes an event receives an additonal 3 points PER event.

And here are the Time Trial courses, the tentative dates, and their listed difficulty category:

Cohasset to the Store (from Nicalog) - Sept. 6th - Cat. 2 - COMPLETED!
Forest Ranch - Sept. 27th - Cat. 1
Honey Run Rd. (from Covered Bridge) - Oct. 10th - Cat. 1
Pentz Road (from Spring Valley School) - Oct. 17th - Cat. 2
Cohasset to Gravel (from Nicalog to the end of Cohasset Road) - Oct. 24th - Hors Category
Centerville (from Covered Bridge to the gravel) - Nov. 7th - Cat. 3
Neal Road - Nov. 15th - Cat. 3
Table Mountain (Wildflower Side) - Nov. 21st - Cat. 1
Clark Road (from intersection with Durham Pentz) - Dec. 12th - Cat. 2
Humboldt Road - Dec. 27th - Cat. 3

10 Climbs, approximately 18,000 feet of climbing in total, held over a 4-month period from September through December. Consistency will be key in winning the Overall Series.

Participant Categories - the following categories will be offered for the Series event(see below) The winner in each category will receive the 2009 Chico Hillclimb Champion Trophy, along with Bragging Rights.........as well as any stuff we can get to give away as prizes:

Category "A" Men
Category "B" Men
Women's Category
Clydesdale Men (No no, I'm not gonna weigh you - just show up and tell me and I will give you a yes or no answer.....however, I'm looking for about 200 pound body weight or more)
Mens 50+ Category
Mens 60+ Category
Womens 40+ Category
Womens 50+ Category

As usual, sandbaggers are strongly discouraged (A Sandbagger would be a Category "A" rider entering a Category "B" event). Also, if there's a lot of folks in one particular category, we may split those up into sub-categories, if needed. In turn, if nobody - or very few folks are in one category, we may eliminate it and add an additional category where the numbers allow it.

This Series is FREE - so come on out and take advantage of some, or all, of these Time Trials in the Fall/Winter of 2009! Hope to see you out there - and I will have more details, maps and information as we get closer to the events.

Nutcracker Omnium Information:

Yep, it is that time of year again - time for the Nutcracker Omnium! The dates are from Sept. 1st through Sept. 6th, 2009. This was an event started a few years back by Tim Creswell, Mike Trowbridge and Rand Miller. It took a short break, but we brought it back again a couple years back......and it was a blast!! The riders really had a good time with this one. This year, it is back again - bigger and better than ever, with a couple of small changes.

The 5th Annual Nutcracker Omnium will consist of 5 Stages over 6 days this year for Categories "A", "B" and the Women's Category. In reality, there are a total of 6 stages - but only 5 count for Category "A" and 5 count for Category "B" and the Women's Category. There will also be a Men's Masters 45+ Category within the "B" Category. :

Tuesday, Sept. 1st - Chico Airport Criterium - 6:00PM - "Nutcracker" Omnium (Part of the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series - TRIPLE POINT EVENT for the "A" Category) - For Category "A" & "B"
Wednesday, Sept. 2nd - Fast 50 - 6:00PM - Nutcracker Omnium (Counts for the "A" Category ONLY)

Thursday, Sept. 3rd - River Road 10-Mile TT - 6:00PM - Nutcracker Omnium (Part of the 2009 Chico 10-Mile Time Trial Series - DOUBLE POINT EVENT for the Series) - For Category "A" & "B"

Friday, Sept. 4th - Chico Airport Criterium - 6:00PM - Nutcracker Omnium (Counts for the "B" & Women's Category ONLY) (Part of the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series - TRIPLE POINT EVENT FOR THE "B" & Women's Categories) - For Category "B".

Saturday, Sept. 5th - Messilla Valley Circuit Race - 9:00AM - Nutcracker Omnium (Part of the 2009 Chico Road R.A.C.E. Series - DOUBLE POINT EVENT for the Series) - For Category "A" & "B"

Sunday, Sept. 6th - Cohasset UPHILL Time Trial - 9:00AM - Final Stage of Nutcracker Omnium (1st Race in the 2009 Chico Hill Climb Time Trial Series) - For Category "A" & "B"

How does it work???
Okay, in this scenario, an Omnium is just a stage race using points rather than time. You garner points for each stage depending upon how you did in the stage.......and, again, in this case.........the MOST points wins(many Omniums reverse this and have the least amount of points winning). There WILL be a Category "A", Category "B" and Women's Category - you must tell me at the start of the Tuesday Night Airport Criterium which Category you are entering.......and no downgrades during the Omnium once you're in. Categories may be combined, changed or eliminated if not enough folks come out. Most United States Cycling Federation rules will apply to ALL stages - including WEAR YOUR HELMET, don't ride too much like a nutcase, and so on and so forth. Please read the rules carefully at the bottom of this e-mail for all the rules pertaining to the Nutcracker Omnium. The River Road Time Trial - aero equipment WILL NOT be allowed for the Omnium! And remember - the only reasons we're doing this Omnium is for fun and fitness......and maybe a little competitiveness too, but nothing over-the-top please! Ride safe, have fun, try something new and challenge yourself. Anyone doing any of the stages is automatically entered in the Omnium..........but consistency in the events will be key. The Nutcracker Omnium Trophy will be awarded to the winner in each Category of the Omnium - but the Actual "Nutcracker" will go to the winner of the Mens "A" Division(trophy currently held by Kevin Speacht - last year's winner!).

So.....with that said, here are the Point Breakdowns for each of the Stages of the upcoming Nutcracker Omnium - and carefully read the rules listed below!:

2009 Chico Hill Climb Time Trial Series Starts Sunday!!!

Hi Everyone!! Hey, just wanted to give you a head's up that the 2009 Chico Hill Climb Time Trial Series is coming up this weekend - the 1st race in the Series is the Cohasset Uphill Time Trial held on Sunday, September 6th, 2009!

2009 Chico Hill Climb Time Trial Series:

6th - Cat. 2

AIRPORT CRITERIUM SERIES INFORMATION:

After the great turn-out at last year's Tuesday Night Chico Airport Criterium Series, we're going to be doing them again for 2009......but starting up a bit earlier this year. For those curious, the definition of "Criterium" is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criterium

This Series starts up next Tuesday, March 10th and will go through September 15th, 2009......just before our Chico Downtown Criterium on September 20th! Registration normally starts at 5:40pm - with the event starting at 6:00pm.

How does it work???

Okay, here are a few notes for this year's Airport "Crit" Series:

1. We will be using more than 1 course for the Crits this year......including throwing in some lefty-turn Crits to get a feel for those - and some Weekend Criteriums as well. For the time being, we'll be using our standard Tuesday Night righty-turn course starting/finishing at Convair Avenue - http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Chico-Airport-Tuesday-Night-Crit-Course

2. ALL riders must sign in this year - There will be a small table on the sidewalk at the Start/Finish location on Convair Avenue - just sign in at the table and you are good to go! Sign-ins start at 5:40pm - the racing action starts at 6:00pm. We usually end the event by 7pm, at the latest - many times earlier than that - to get home before it gets too dark outside. RAIN AND WET PAVEMENT WILL ALWAYS CANCEL THE CRITERIUMS! In addition, last year we had some tremendous smoke from the Humboldt Fire in this area......which, in turn, would also cancel the Criteriums due to hazardous air quality.

3. The Category "B" races normally go for 45-50 minutes PLUS 3 laps.........while the Category "A" races go for 50-60 minutes PLUS 3 laps. There can be anywhere from 1 to 15+ Primes in the Airport Criteriums......just depends on the mood of the Dictator.....er......I mean, Director. ;)

4. Helmets are MANDATORY! So, please....please.....wear your helmet! Please!!

5. All are welcome - you don't have to do the Series - just come on out and give this Criterium training/riding a shot! It's amazing what kind of workout you can get in during a 45 to 60 minute practice event.

6. Points are used to calculate the Overall Standings in the Series. The point breakdown is as follows: 7-5-4-3-2-1, with an additional 1 point being given to each participant at each event. So, 7 points goes to the winner, 5 points goes to 2nd place, 4 points goes to 3rd place and so on.........in addition to 1 more point just for doing the event. The rider with the MOST points at the end of the Series wins the Overall Title - and the Chico Airport Series Championship Trophy, plus whatever goodies we can give you. Also, Prime points will be given out during each of the Crits - these are just lap prizes......but in this case, the prizes are points. We will also be having some product Primes out there this year!

7. Last year, we had just two categories during the races - Category A and Category B. However, the Series itself has even more Trophy Categories, including:

Category "A" Men
Women's Category
Women's Masters 40+ Category
Category "B" Men
Men's Masters 40+ Category
Men's Masters 50+ Category

These are the Categories which all qualify for a Series Championship Trophy. If nobody - or very few folks are in one category - we may eliminate it and add an additional category where the numbers allow it. As usual, sandbaggers are strongly discouraged ( A Sandbagger would be a Category "A" rider entering a Category "B" event).

8. Although donations to put on these events are always very appreciated and accepted, this Series is FREE - so come on out and take advantage of some, or all, of these Criteriums in 2009!

9. The Race Director reserves the right to DQ any rider for unsafe riding or unsportsmanlike conduct at ANY time. Also, PLEASE - NO colorful language will be used out there - especially with the little kids around watching the race(we have kids out there from ages 2 to 12 watching the racing action)!! ANY rider breaking these rules can be subject to Disqualification from - not only the race - but from the entire Series. So, please - just do what ya always do and just be cool!!!!

10. Finally, remember - these Criterium events are essentially for practice and exercise - we have fun out there and get a great little workout in, and we get to work on some quality cycling skills. But, overall, they're no big whoop....no World Championship/Olympic medals or million dollar contracts on the line. So, with that in mind, just treat 'em as such - a good training event to try some new things, gain some good fitness.....and maybe even get into a "real" sanctioned Criterium at some point in time. Or not. Just have fun with it!! We'll have trophies and hopefully some prizes for the Series winners - and definitely loads of fun....and pain and suffering. ;) But remember - it's all in good fun!

Hope to see you out there!!
