INFORMATION REGARDING THE 2009 CHICO 10-MILE TIME TRIAL SERIES:

1. There will be more than 1 course used for this year's 10-Mile Time Trial Series. The courses will be scattered around the Chico area - Chico River Road, River Road, Aguas Frias Road, 7-Mile Lane, Lassen Road, Meridian Road and others to be announced as the weeks go on. The idea is to get a feel for the various 10-Mile TT routes around the area.....and just to challenge yourself a bit! Many of these Time Trials will be on Thursday evenings at 6:00PM - however, there may be a few that are thrown in on a different weeknight - or on the weekend. ALL of these Time Trials will be flat to fairly flat. Most of the Thursday Night 10-Mile Time Trials WILL count towards the Series Overall Standings. (There will be a 25-Mile TT Series, as well as a 6-Mile TT Series, announced soon).

2. ALL riders must sign in this year - Like all the events so far this year, you just need to sign in at the start in order to enter the event. And, as usual in these Time Trials, we will be going in 1-minute Intervals. Again, donations are always accepted and appreciated - but all of the events are FREE!

3. Rain and Wind will not cancel the Time Trials, unless specified by the Race Director. However, crudy air conditions(ex. - last year's Humboldt Fire) will cancel them.

4. Helmets are MANDATORY! So, please....please.....wear your helmet! Please!! AND - Yes, Aero Equipment is allowed!! So.....wear an aero helmet!! Or just a regular one!!

5. All are welcome - you don't have to do the Series - just come on out and give one or two of these events a shot! It's amazing what kind of workout you can get in during a 20 to 45 minute 10-Mile Time Trial! And it's just you against the clock!!

6. Points are used to calculate the Overall Standings in this particular Series(makes it easier for the promoter - sorry!). The point breakdown is as follows: 10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1-1, with an additional 2 points being given to each participant who completes each event. So, 10 points goes to the winner, 8 points goes to 2nd place, 6 points goes to 3rd place and so on.........everyone who finishes 6th or beyond gets 1-point for completing the event. The rider with the MOST points at the end of the Series wins the Overall Title - and the Chico 10-MIle Time Trial Series Championship Trophy, plus whatever goodies we can give you. Points will be broken down by Category. Once you enter and finish an event, you are entered in the Series.

7. The following Categories are eligible for a Series Championship Trophy:

Merckxian Category - NO aero equipment!
Category "A" Men
Women's Category
Women's Masters 45+ Category
Category "B" Men
Men's Masters 45+ Category
Men's Masters 55+ Category
Junior Men
Junior Women
(If the numbers allow it, more Categories will be added!) (Can not enter more than 2 Categories per event).

These are the Categories which all qualify for a Series Championship Trophy. If nobody - or very few folks are in one category - we may eliminate it and add an additional category where the numbers allow it. As usual, sandbaggers are strongly discouraged ( A Sandbagger would be a Category "A" rider entering a Category "B" event). And, as usual, the Series Organizer reserves the right to re-classify you at any time(within reason and with plenty of notice though.....this isn't the UCI!!!)

8. Finally, remember - these Time Trial events are essentially for practice and exercise - we have fun out there and get a great little workout in, and we get to work on some quality cycling. But, overall, they're no big whoop....no World Championship/Olympic medals or million dollar contracts on the line. So, with that in mind, just treat 'em as such - a good training event to try some new things, gain some good fitness.....and maybe even get into a "real" sanctioned race at some point in time. Or not. Just have fun with it!! We'll have trophies and hopefully some prizes for the Series winners - and definitely loads of fun....and pain and suffering. ;) But remember - it's all in good fun!

Thursday, April 30th - Meridian Road 10-Mile Time Trial (a new course!) - A NEW course to try out in the 10-Mile Time Trial Series. This is a straight 5-mile out, 5-mile back in Time Trial - the course has approximately 130 feet of total climbing....primarily on the way out. This Time Trial WILL count towards the 2009 Chico 10-Mile Time Trial Series!

Friday, May 1st - Cohasset Narrows Mini-Road Race - Registration will open at 5:45pm on Ryan Avenue on the north end of the airport - just to the west of the Fifth Sun parking lot(look for me on Ryan Avenue with the clipboard). Ride leaves at 6:00pm and will climb to just past the "Road Narrows" & "Share The Road" sign at the top of the "good" road - just go your own pace. The ride itself is only about 7 miles in length, but includes about 1,500 feet of climbing. I will be there with the sag vehicle if you run into a problem - and will be at the finish line to score you - I will have water too. This is a great little after-work ride to stretch the legs a bit for the weekend! An approximate map of the course can be found here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Friday-Night-Cohasset-Uphill-Race

Saturday, May 2nd - Table Mountain Road Race - 9:00AM - This particular course was first used by the Chico Velo Cycling Club as a USCF RR course in 1984 during the Chico Omnium(which also included the 7-Mile Lane Time Trial and the Chico Downtown Criterium that year). Most groups did 2 laps of this course, but the Cat.1/2 guys did 3 or 4. However, I wouldn't do that to ya - we're only going to do 1 lap in this race - for a total of approximately 25 miles and approximately 2,100 feet of total climbing. The course preview is located on Bikely.com here - and you can see the Course Profile by clicking on "Show" in the top left-hand corner........then clicking on "Elevation Profile":

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Old-Table-Mountain-Road-Race-Course

Like the Messilla Valley Circuit Race, this will have a Category "A" and a Category "B". The Start/Finish Line is located on Table Mountain Boulevard right by Table Mountain Ranch Road(see Bikely Map - this was the Start/Finish Line for the 1984 race as well - I'll be out there early, so look for the registration table). Each Category will do just 1 lap = 25 miles. Registration will open at 8:30AM with Category A going off at 9:00AM........and Category B going at 9:03AM. Women's Category will be scored separately. Parking is available on the unfinished freeway overpass at the Start/Finish Line.

Now, a word of warning - This course goes in a clockwise direction - meaning that you will be climbing up to Cherokee from Hwy. 70. Although the hill does not seem quite as difficult as from the other side(the Wildflower Century side), the descent off Table Mountain will be quite tricky. Make certain that your bicycle is in good working order and that you are comfortable on technical descents. The Road Race course goes through amazingly diverse sections and is quite scenic - but please look out for one another and for yourselves, especially on the descent and on the Highway. All USCF rules apply, as usual - you know, don't do stupid stuff, wear a helmet, obey the centerline, etc. Route Arrows will mark the course as well. Bottle hand ups and Feed Zones will be solely dependent upon volunteers - Feed Zone is pretty much anywhere on the course. Sag vehicles will be solely dependent upon volunteers as well. I will be sweeping the course at the end as well - so if I don't see you back at the Finish, I'm coming to get you!

Sunday, May 3rd - Butte City Road Race (Bringing back the old classic!!!) - 9:00AM - The Chico Velo Cycling Club did this as a United States Cycling Federation Road Race back in.....what.....1982 or 1983. In fact, yours truly actually won the Junior race, believe it or not. Anyway, we decided to bring it back again, just to give it a test! This course is approximately 36 miles in length and includes a whopping 189 feet of total climbing! We'll be doing 1-lap only. Like yesterday's Road Race, we will have a Category "A" and a Category "B" group - Women's Category will be scored separately. The Start/Finish of this one is at the Ord Bend Park(the last Rest Stop of this year's Wildflower Century). Registration will open at 8:30am - with the Category "A" race going off at 9:00AM - the Category "B" race going off at 9:03am. The course follows a Clockwise direction - east on Ord Ferry Road, south on 7-Mile Lane, west on Hwy. 162, north on Hwy. 45.....then finishing up back on Ord Ferry Road at the Ord Bend Park. Route Arrows will mark the course - and there are bathrooms and plenty of parking at Ord Bend Park! A map of this course can be found here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/The-Really-Old-Butte-City-RR-Course Hope you can come out to give this one a shot!!

INFORMATION REGARDING THE 2009 CHICO 25-MILE TIME TRIAL SERIES:

1. There will be more than 1 course used for this year's 25-Mile Time Trial Series. The courses will be around the Chico area - Aguas Frias Road, 7-Mile Lane and possibly others. The idea is to get a feel for the various 25-Mile TT routes around the area.....and just to challenge yourself a bit! Many of these Time Trials will be on Thursday evenings at 6:00PM - however, there may be one that is thrown in on a different weeknight - or on the weekend. ALL of these Time Trials will be flat to fairly flat. There will be 6 Time Trials that count towards this Series - 1 per month from April through September 2009.

It's amazing what kind of workout you can get in during a 25-Mile Time Trial! And it's just you against the clock!!

6. Points are used to calculate the Overall Standings in this particular Series(makes it easier for the promoter - sorry!). The point breakdown is as follows: 10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1-1, with an additional 4 points being given to each participant who completes each event. So, 10 points goes to the winner, 8 points goes to 2nd place, 6 points goes to 3rd place and so on.........everyone who finishes 6th or beyond gets 1-point for completing the event. The rider with the MOST points at the end of the Series wins the Overall Title - and the Chico 25-MIle Time Trial Series Championship Trophy, plus whatever goodies we can give you. Points will be broken down by Category. Once you enter and finish an event, you are entered in the Series. However, the Race Director reserves the right to DQ anyone at any time - usually for flagrant violations of common sense. ;)

Tonight's Chico Airport Criterium Results...........

Hi Everyone!! Well, it was a hot night out there for tonight's Chico Airport Criterium.......but even with the high temperatures, we had 23 riders take part in the event.....and a few spectators too!! Thank you ALL for coming out to this one!! I hope next week's Airport Criterium is a little bit cooler, in terms of air temperature!

We had a good race in both events - lots of 1-place Primes, and lots of points to be taken. The "A" Category saw the heat take a toll on the riders, but it was Jeff Galland just outsprinting Kevin Speacht and Alex Blease for the win! The "B" Category saw a good-working group stick together.......but in the end, it was Tom Embree taking the final sprint! We had a camera malfunction for the "B" race, so let me know if the results look odd!! Video of the Category "A" finish can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chicovelo/

AIRPORT CRITERIUM SERIES INFORMATION:

After the great turn-out at last year's Tuesday Night Chico Airport Criterium Series, we're going to be doing them again for 2009......but starting up a bit earlier this year. For those curious, the definition of "Criterium" is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criterium

This Series starts up next Tuesday, March 10th and will go through September 15th, 2009......just before our Chico Downtown Criterium on September 20th! Registration normally starts at 5:40pm - with the event starting at 6:00pm.

How does it work???

Okay, here are a few notes for this year's Airport "Crit" Series:

1. We will be using more than 1 course for the Crits this year......including throwing in some lefty-turn Crits to get a feel for those - and some Weekend Criteriums as well. For the time being, we'll be using our standard Tuesday Night righty-turn course starting/finishing at Convair Avenue - http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Chico-Airport-Tuesday-Night-Crit-Course

2. ALL riders must sign in this year - There will be a small table on the sidewalk at the Start/Finish location on Convair Avenue - just sign in at the table and you are good to go! Sign-ins start at 5:40pm - the racing action starts at 6:00pm. We usually end the event by 7pm, at the latest - many times earlier than that - to get home before it gets too dark outside. RAIN AND WET PAVEMENT WILL ALWAYS CANCEL THE CRITERIUMS! In addition, last year we had some tremendous smoke from the Humboldt Fire in this area......which, in turn, would also cancel the Criteriums due to hazardous air quality.

3. The Category "B" races normally go for 45 minutes PLUS 3 laps.........while the Category "A" races go for 50-60 minutes PLUS 3 laps. There can be anywhere from 1 to 15+ Primes in the Airport Criteriums......just depends on the mood of the Dictator.....er......I mean, Director. ;)

4. Helmets are MANDATORY! So, please....please.....wear your helmet! Please!!

5. All are welcome - you don't have to do the Series - just come on out and give this Criterium training/riding a shot! It's amazing what kind of workout you can get in during a 45 to 60 minute practice event.

6. Points are used to calculate the Overall Standings in the Series. The point breakdown is as follows: 7-5-4-3-2-1, with an additional 1 point being given to each participant at each event. So, 7 points goes to the winner, 5 points goes to 2nd place, 4 points goes to 3rd place and so on.........in addition to 1 more point just for doing the event. The rider with the MOST points at the end of the Series wins the Overall Title - and the Chico Airport Series Championship Trophy, plus whatever goodies we can give you. Also, Prime points will be given out during each of the Crits - these are just lap prizes......but in this case, the prizes are points. We will also be having some product Primes out there this year!

7. Last year, we had just two categories during the races - Category A and Category B. However, the Series itself has even more Trophy Categories, including:

Category "A" Men
Women's Category
Women's Masters 40+ Category
Category "B" Men
Men's Masters 40+ Category
Men's Masters 50+ Category

These are the Categories which all qualify for a Series Championship Trophy. If nobody - or very few folks are in one category - we may eliminate it and add an additional category where the numbers allow it. As usual, sandbaggers are strongly discouraged ( A Sandbagger would be a Category "A" rider entering a Category "B" event).

8. Although donations to put on these events are always very appreciated and accepted, this Series is FREE - so come on out and take advantage of some, or all, of these Criteriums in 2009!

9. Finally, remember - these Criterium events are essentially for practice and exercise - we have fun out there and get a great little workout in, and we get to work on some quality cycling skills. But, overall, they're no big whoop....no World Championship/Olympic medals or million dollar contracts on the line. So, with that in mind, just treat 'em as such - a good training event to try some new things, gain some good fitness.....and maybe even get into a "real" sanctioned Criterium at some point in time. Or not. Just have fun with it!! We'll have trophies and hopefully some prizes for the Series winners - and definitely loads of fun....and pain and suffering. ;) But remember - it's all in good fun!

Hope to see you out there!!

AND - THE BUTTE SERIES HILL CLIMB INFORMATION IS BELOW:

Hi Everyone! So, we are starting a NEW Hill Climb Series this next Spring - The Butte Hill Climb Time Trial Series in Spring 2009 will visit various parts of Butte County, with the climbs and dates below. There was a similar Series done years ago here in Chico - 1981 or 1982 - by Tom Devol and Jeff Smith, who owned Cyclesport bike shop at the time. And, of course, now there is that almost-famous Low Key Hillclimb Series in the Bay Area every fall. In any case, we decided to have our own and revive the old Hill Climb Series.......with a few route changes. Below is a list of the tentative events with dates. It should be mentioned that these dates could change depending upon other events going on. And, of course......the weather! Rain will NOT cancel - but snow and ice will.

Note: The Chico Hill Climb Time Trial Series will be back in the Fall/Winter of 2009 - starting in September! The Butte Series will go from January 1st, 2009 to May 31st, 2009. This Series follows a slow progression over 5 months - starting with the Category 3 climbs early to get your legs ready........and ending with the Category 1 climbs in May. This should help you take advantage of those springtime miles!! And, yes.....there will be a Summer Series as well.

How does it work??? Below are each of the 10 Hillclimbs in the Butte Hill Climb Time Trial Series. Each climb has been given a rank based upon feedback from some well-known riders in the area (and climbers in particular - yes, I know - everyone is different, but this is just a low-key have-fun series, so no big whoop). Category 1 climbs are the hardest, with Category 3 being.......let's not say easiest.......let's say........not quite as hard as Category 1! Points will be awarded to the top finishers in each Hill Climb TT - the folks with the most points at the end of the Series, wins the overall title in their respective categories........along with the coveted Butte County Hill Climb Champion Trophy.

EVERY competitor who starts and finishes an event receives an additonal 3 points PER event. Also, if you volunteer to be the STARTER for an event, you receive an additional 5 points for doing that task.

The Point Breakdown for placings is as follows:

Cat. 1 Climb = 30-26-24-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1 (In other words, 1st place in a Cat. 1 TT gets 30 points, 2nd place gets 26 and on down the line - every person who competes in the event gets at least 1 point).
Cat. 2 Climb = 24-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1(The winner of a Cat. 2 climb gets 24 points, 2nd place gets 20 points and on and on.)
Cat. 3 Climb = 20-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1

And here are the Time Trial courses, the tentative dates, and their listed difficulty category:

Humboldt Road Time Trial - Jan. 1st - Cat. 3 - Definitely on January 1st. - COMPLETED!
Centerville to the Gravel - January 11 - Cat. 3 - COMPLETED!
Cherokee Time Trial - February 21 - Cat. 3 (Start at Coal Canyon Road @ Wheelock Rd. and go up 70, turn at Cherokee) - COMPLETED!
Cohasset to the Store - March 7 - Cat. 2 - COMPLETED!
Pentz Road - March 14 - Cat. 2 - COMPLETED!
Coutelenc TT - April 5 - Cat. 2 (Just stay on Coutelenc Road) - COMPLETED!
Vilas Road Time Trial - April 18 - Cat. 1 (From Nicalog to the end of Vilas) - COMPLETED!
Honey Run Road - May 10 - Cat. 1
Forest Ranch to Lomo - May 16 - Cat. 1(starts at Forest Ranch Store; ends at entrance to Butte Meadows)
Lomo to Jonesville TT - May 24 - Cat. 1 (starts at Hwy. 32 at entrance to Butte Meadows; ends at the snowmobile parking lot)
(Yes, I have a Summer Series planned too!)

10 Climbs, approximately 18,000 feet of climbing in total, held over a 5-month period from January through May 2009. Consistency will be key in winning the Overall Series.

Participant Categories - the following categories will be offered for the Series event(see below) The winner in each category will receive the Butte Hill Climb Champion Trophy, along with Bragging Rights.........as well as any stuff we can get to give away as prizes:

Category "A" Men
Category "B" Men
Women's Category
Womens 50+ Category
Clydesdale Men (No no, I'm not gonna weigh you - just show up and tell me and I will give you a yes or no answer.....however, I'm looking for about 200 pound body weight or more)
Mens 50+ Category
Mens 60+ Category

As usual, sandbaggers are strongly discouraged ( A Sandbagger would be a Category "A" rider entering a Category "B" event). Also, if there's a lot of folks in one particular category, we may split those up into sub-categories, if needed. In turn, if nobody - or very few folks are in one category, we may eliminate it and add an additional category where the numbers allow it.

Although donations to put on these events are always very appreciated and accepted, this Series is FREE - so come on out and take advantage of some, or all, of these Time Trials in Spring 2009! Hope to see you out there - and I will have more details, maps and information as we get closer to the events.

TGIF Schedule.............

Some weekend R.A.C.E. Events to consider on this amazing weather day:

Friday, April 17th - Cohasset Narrows Mini-Road Race
- Registration will open at 5:45pm on Ryan Avenue on the north end of the airport - just to the west of the Fifth Sun parking lot(look for me on Ryan Avenue with the clipboard). Ride leaves at 6:00pm and will climb to just past the "Road Narrows" & "Share The Road" sign at the top of the "good" road - just go your own pace. The ride itself is only about 7 miles in length, but includes about 1,500 feet of climbing. I will be there with the sag vehicle if you run into a problem - and will be at the finish line to score you - will have water too. This is a great little after-work ride to stretch the legs a bit for the weekend! An approximate map of the course can be found here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Friday-Night-Cohasset-Uphill-Race

Saturday, April 18th - Vilas Road Uphill Time Trial - The next event in the Butte Hill Climb Time Trial Series is Event #7 - The Category 1 Climb of Vilas Road! We'll ride up Cohasset Road to Cohasset, go past the Store, and keep going up Vilas Road(NOT Cohasset Road!) until it turns to dirt.......which is the finishing location. Approximately 7 miles in length, with about 2,360 feet of elevation gain. A map of this next course can be found here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Vilas-Road-Time-Trial Want to earn an EXTRA 5 POINTS - I still need a volunteer to start the riders off at the beginning - 5 points to anyone that can help me with this fun little endeavor.....and yes, you can still race the TT, you just have to be the last one to start!! (Part of the 2009 Butte Hill Climb Time Trial Series!)

Sunday, April 19th - Field of Dreams Time Trial - A NEW rolling course Time Trial! The Start/Finish is at Spring Valley School on Pentz Road - you'll go to Hwy. 70 to Clark Road, take Clark Road to Durham Pentz Road, then Durham Pentz back to Pentz Road to the finish at the school.......all right-hand turns. The course will be marked with Route Arrows. A map of this course can be found here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Field-of-Dreams-Time-Trial-LongCourse

Sunday, April 19th - Airport LONG-course Criterium(using the 1-Mile course for this afternoon Criterium) - We'll be using the NEW Criterium Course for this event - the 1-Mile Chico Airport Long-Course. Registration will open at 4:15pm for this one, with the Start at 4:30pm. The course Starts & Finishes on Marauder Street.......over by the old Koret building on the north end of the Airport. A map of this course can be found here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Airport-Criterium-Long-Course . This event DOES count towards the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series. Also, in order to get use to this new course, the first 2 laps will be neutralized so that y'all can get a feel for the course in a pack situation. After that......expect lots of Point Primes. This new course has a little elevation gain to it as well - not much, but just enough to feel it. Category "A" will go for 45 Minutes PLUS 3 laps(remember - the course is 1-mile in length). Category "B" will go for 40 Minutes PLUS 3 laps. (Part of the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series!)
