Saturday, June 18th - Coal Canyon Circuit Race - 9:00AM:

The Coal Canyon Circuit Race is back for the month of June! This 5.9 mile long loop goes over rolling terrain and climbs approximately 290 feet per lap. Will suit a variety of riders. Registration will open at 8:30am NEAR the intersection of Coal Canyon Road-Wheelock Road & Hwy. 70. The Category "A" Race will go off at 9:00AM, the Category "B", "C" & "Juniors" Race will go at 9:02AM. Category "A" & "B" Riders will do 6 laps each - for a total of 35.4 Miles and 1,740 feet of total climbing. The Category "C" & Juniors Race will go 3 laps - for a total of 17.7 Miles and 870 feet of total climbing. Masters & Women's categories will race with the "B" group, but picked separately at the finish for placings. The Start/Finish Line is located on Coal Canyon Road - just up the road from the intersection of Wheelock Road & Hwy. 70. You will travel in a clockwise direction from Coal Canyon Road to Hwy. 70....and back to Coal Canyon Road....for one lap. For a map of this course, please visit:

I will have some water available at the Start/Finish location, but water bottle hand-ups will be solely dependent upon volunteers! Parking is somewhat available at the Start/Finish area of the course - but the best bet is to park at Spring Valley School and just ride down to the Start Area on Coal Canyon Road........approximately 2.7 miles away from the school(and downhill when heading to Coal Canyon). Most USA Cycling rules apply to these races - you know, WEAR YOUR HELMET, don't ride like a nutcase, and all that good stuff. Sandbaggers are strongly discouraged (a Sandbagger would be a Category "A" rider racing a Category "B" or "C" race - must be completely obvious to the Race Director). The Race Director reserves the right to DQ any rider deemed unsafe or unsportsmanlike. A mention about Tri Bars - You can have Tri Bars on your bicycle - BUT, you must NOT use them if you are in a pack or paceline - especially on this course! Normally, in a USA Cycling sanctioned race, you would not be allowed to have them on your bicycle in a mass-start event like this one - but I know many of us like them on our bicycles and use them for training. Wednesday, June 15th - The FAST 50 - 6:00PM:

The long-running "Fast 50" Wednesday night rides! The starting spot for this ride is in the parking lot of Rosedale Elementary School located at 100 Oak Street here in Chico. The ride leaves promptly at 6:00pm from the parking lot area. Many different levels of cyclists out there, so hook up with someone and enjoy the ride! A few other groups meet up at 5:30pm to do a more civilized-paced ride, so come on out!! A map of the course can be found here:

Thursday, June 16th - River Road 10-Mile Time Trial - 6:00pm:

Registration will open at 5:40pm, with the first rider going off at 6:01pm. We will go in 1-minute intervals for this 5-miles out, 5-miles back, all-flat Time Trial. This classic Chico Time Trial course has been used for the last 31+ years. Come on out after work and give this one a shot! An extremely rough draft of this course can be found here:

Today's Butte City Road Race - 9:00AM!

Stage #3 - Sunday, June 12th - The Butte City Road Race - 9:00AM:

This 36-Mile, all-flat, Road Race was used by the Chico Velo Cycling Club back in the early 1980s as part of the Chico Velo Omnium Bicycle Race. In fact, yours truly took the Junior title in this Road Race one year.....so, it's always been one of my favorites. ;) Registration will open at 8:30AM at Ord Bend Park on Ord Ferry Road(very near Hwy. 45). Category "A" will start at 9:00AM, with Category "B" & "C" starting at 9:02AM - and, like the Aguas Frias Road Race, Masters, Women's and Junior's fields will start with Category "B", but counted separately in the Omnium points standings. The course Starts & Finishes on Ord Ferry Road - across the street from Ord Bend Park. The course follows a clockwise direction - east on Ord Ferry, then south(right turn) on 7- Mile Lane, then west(right turn) on Hwy. 162, then north(right turn) on Hwy. 45 - and back east(right turn) on Ord Ferry to the finish line. The course is one big 36-mile loop - and all Categories will do just 1-lap. All turns will be marked with Route Arrows - and I will have water and Clif Bars at the Start/Finish location. The Llano Seco Omnium Bicycle Race is being held this weekend - June 11th & 12th, 2011! The format is 3 flat stages over 2 days - and, again, an Omnium is just a bicycle stage race using points rather than time....and you don't have to do one stage in order to do the next stage.....and can get into the Omnium by completing any of the stages. The 3 stages involved in this weekend's Llano Seco Omnium Bicycle Race include the following:


Stage # 1 - Saturday, June 11th - The Aguas Frias Road Race
(50-point event in the 2011 Butte Road R.A.C.E. Series) - 9:00AM.


Stage #2 - Saturday, June 11th - The Llano Seco 17-mile Time Trial
(25-point event in the 2011 Chico Time Trial Series) - 2:00PM.


Stage #3 - Sunday, June 12th - The Butte City Road Race
(60-point event in the 2011 Butte Road R.A.C.E. Series) - 9:00AM.

How does it work??? And what in the world is an "Omnium" bicycle race???
Okay, in this scenario, an Omnium is just a Stage Race bicycle race using points rather than time - and you do not have to complete one stage in order to do the next stage. You garner points for each stage depending upon how you did in the stage.......and, again, in this particular case.........the MOST points wins(many Omniums reverse this and have the least amount of points winning). There will be multiple categories competing in the Llano Seco Omnium(see Categories listed above). We are asking for donations of $20 to enter the entire event - or $10 per stage - or whatever you can spare - all going to help Aliya and her family get to Augusta, Georgia on June 22nd - 26th. Once entering the Omnium, there will be no downgrades during the event. Categories may be combined, changed or eliminated if not enough folks come out. Most USA Cycling rules will apply to ALL stages - including WEAR YOUR HELMET, don't ride too much like a lunatic, and so on and so forth. Please read the section carefully at the bottom of this e-mail for some of the rules pertaining to the Llano Seco Omnium. And remember - the only reason we're doing this Omnium is for fun, fitness, fundraising......and maybe a little competitiveness too - but nothing over-the-top please! Ride safe, have fun, try something new and challenge yourself. Anyone doing any of the stages is automatically entered in the Omnium..........but consistency in the events will be key to winning the Overall Title. We will have prizes & trophies to give away to the winners and top placers. The entire Omnium is held on flat roads - no hills.

2011 Llano Seco Ominum Route Information:

Stage # 1 - Saturday, June 11th - Aguas Frias Road Race - 9:00AM:
The Aguas Frias Road Race has been on the R.A.C.E. calendar for the last 4 years - but this is the first time we'll be using it in 2011. The Start/Finish line for this race is at the same location as our Thursday night Aguas Frias 10-mile Time Trial - just south of Dayton 4-corners. Registration will open at 8:30am - with the Category "A" race starting at 9:00am - and the Category "B" & "C" race starting at 9:02am. Masters, Women's and Juniors will start with Category "B", but will be counted separately in the Omnium points standings. The course is 33-miles in length, and starts just south of Dayton 4-corners on Aguas Frias Road...........the riders head south on Aguas Frias until they get to Hwy. 162. At Hwy. 162, the riders head west(right turn) and make their way to Road Z/7-Mile Lane. At that point, the riders will head north on Road Z/7-Mile-Lane(right turn) until they reach Ord Ferry Road. A right turn at Ord Ferry Road has them heading east back to Aguas Frias Road.....where they will make the final right turn to the finish line. It's one lap for all Categories. The course follows a clockwise direction and is about 33 miles in length - and has a whopping 112 feet of elevation gain. In other words, it's a flat road race. Stage #2 - Saturday, June 11th - The Llano Seco 17-Mile Time Trial - 2:00PM:
The Llano Seco 17-Mile Time Trial starts and finishes on 7-Mile Lane, just west of Aguas Frias Road and Dayton 4-corners. Registration will open at 1:30pm, with the 1st rider taking off at 2:01pm - and we will go in 1-minute intervals per rider for this 8.5 mile out, 8.5 miles back, all-flat Time Trial. This 17-mile course starts near the intersection of 7-Mile Lane and Ord Ferry Road - just look for me and the R.A.C.E.mobile at the Start location. The course travels south on 7-Mile Lane for 8.5 miles, then back north on 7-Mile Lane to the finish. The turn-around location will be marked - as usual - with cones and Route Arrows. This Time Trial is all-flat - no hills. Aero equipment and clothing IS allowed in the Time Trial. This 36-Mile, all-flat, Road Race was used by the Chico Velo Cycling Club back in the early 1980s as part of the Chico Velo Omnium Bicycle Race. In fact, yours truly took the Junior title in this Road Race one year.....so, it's always been one of my favorites. ;) Registration will open at 8:30AM at Ord Bend Park on Ord Ferry Road(very near Hwy. 45). A FEW MORE RACE NOTES:
Most USA Cycling rules apply to these races - you know, WEAR YOUR HELMET, don't ride like a nutcase, and all that good stuff. Sandbaggers are strongly discouraged (a Sandbagger would be a Category "A" rider racing a Category "B" or "C" race - must be completely obvious to the Race Director). A mention about Tri Bars - You can have Tri Bars on your bicycle - BUT, you must NOT use them if you are in a pack or paceline during the Road Races! Normally, in a USA Cycling sanctioned race, you would not be allowed to have them on your bicycle in a mass-start event like the two road races in this Omnium - but I know many of us like them on our bicycles and use them for training. This isn't the World Championships - we do these races for fun, fitness and practice - but please do NOT use your Tri Bars in a pack/paceline situation.

The format is 3 flat stages over 2 days - and, again, an Omnium is just a bicycle stage race using points rather than time....and you don't have to do one stage in order to do the next stage.....and can get into the Omnium by completing any of the stages. How does it work??? And what in the world is an "Omnium" bicycle race???
Okay, in this scenario, an Omnium is just a Stage Race bicycle race using points rather than time - and you do not have to complete one stage in order to do the next stage. You garner points for each stage depending upon how you did in the stage.......and, again, in this particular case.........the MOST points wins(many Omniums reverse this and have the least amount of points winning). There will be multiple categories competing in the Llano Seco Omnium(see Categories listed above). We are asking for donations of $20 to enter the entire event - or $10 per stage - or whatever you can spare - all going to help Aliya and her family get to Augusta, Georgia on June 22nd - 26th. Once entering the Omnium, there will be no downgrades during the event. Categories may be combined, changed or eliminated if not enough folks come out. Most USA Cycling rules will apply to ALL stages - including WEAR YOUR HELMET, don't ride too much like a lunatic, and so on and so forth. Please read the section carefully at the bottom of this e-mail for some of the rules pertaining to the Llano Seco Omnium. And remember - the only reason we're doing this Omnium is for fun, fitness, fundraising......and maybe a little competitiveness too - but nothing over-the-top please! Ride safe, have fun, try something new and challenge yourself. Our 13-year-old cycling phenom - Aliya Traficante - is leaving soon for the USA Junior National Championships in Augusta, Georgia taking place on June 22nd - 26th to see if she can bring home the coveted Stars-and-Stripes jersey! In the past month, she has garnered wins at the District Road Racing Championships, the District Criterium Championships and now the District Time Trial Championships(won today)! She's making the long trek to Georgia to see if she can grab the National title - but first, we're going to have one last Omnium Bicycle Race for her - to help her on her journey there and wish her luck! And remember - the only reason we're doing this Omnium is for fun, fitness, fundraising......and maybe a little competitiveness too - but nothing over-the-top please! Ride safe, have fun, try something new and challenge yourself. Anyone doing any of the stages is automatically entered in the Omnium..........but consistency in the events will be key to winning the Overall Title. We will have prizes & trophies to give away to the winners and top placers. The entire Omnium is held on flat roads - no hills.

And Finally - ANY rider participating in ALL 3 Stages receives an additional 10 points.

Do you have to do all the stages in order to compete in the Omnium?? No - you can even do just one event and your points will still be calculated and counted in the overall. And REMEMBER - Safety come before bragging rights, so be careful!!!

As always, the R.A.C.E. Director reserves the right to disqualify anyone deemed cheating, unsafe or unsportsmanlike(no worries - just be cool like always and all will be good!!). Aero equipment can be used in the 2nd stage. Helmets are mandatory in ALL stages.

Tie-Breaker:
If, by chance, it comes down to a TIE after the last stage of the Omnium, the highest placed finisher(of the tied competitors) in the Llano Seco 17-mile Trial will be declared the Overall Winner of the Llano Seco Omnium Bicycle Race.

2011 Llano Seco Ominum Route Information:

Stage # 1 - Saturday, June 11th - Aguas Frias Road Race - 9:00AM:
The Aguas Frias Road Race has been on the R.A.C.E. calendar for the last 4 years - but this is the first time we'll be using it in 2011. The Start/Finish line for this race is at the same location as our Thursday night Aguas Frias 10-mile Time Trial - just south of Dayton 4-corners. Registration will open at 8:30am - with the Category "A" race starting at 9:00am - and the Category "B" & "C" race starting at 9:02am. Masters, Women's and Juniors will start with Category "B", but will be counted separately in the Omnium points standings. The course is 33-miles in length, and starts just south of Dayton 4-corners on Aguas Frias Road...........the riders head south on Aguas Frias until they get to Hwy. 162. At Hwy. 162, the riders head west(right turn) and make their way to Road Z/7-Mile Lane. At that point, the riders will head north on Road Z/7-Mile-Lane(right turn) until they reach Ord Ferry Road. A right turn at Ord Ferry Road has them heading east back to Aguas Frias Road.....where they will make the final right turn to the finish line. It's one lap for all Categories. The course follows a clockwise direction and is about 33 miles in length - and has a whopping 112 feet of elevation gain. In other words, it's a flat road race. All turns will be marked with Route Arrows - and I will have water bottles and Clif Bars at the Start/Finish location. For a map of the Aguas Frias Road Race course, please visit the following link:

Stage #2 - Saturday, June 11th - The Llano Seco 17-Mile Time Trial - 2:00PM:
The Llano Seco 17-Mile Time Trial starts and finishes on 7-Mile Lane, just west of Aguas Frias Road and Dayton 4-corners. Registration will open at 1:30pm, with the 1st rider taking off at 2:01pm - and we will go in 1-minute intervals per rider for this 8.5 mile out, 8.5 miles back, all-flat Time Trial. This 17-mile course starts near the intersection of 7-Mile Lane and Ord Ferry Road - just look for me and the R.A.C.E.mobile at the Start location. The course travels south on 7-Mile Lane for 8.5 miles, then back north on 7-Mile Lane to the finish. The turn-around location will be marked - as usual - with cones and Route Arrows. This Time Trial is all-flat - no hills. Aero equipment and clothing IS allowed in the Time Trial. There is little parking at the Time Trial start location - a good area to park would be at Dayton 4-corners, then ride in to the Start area. A map of the Time Trial course can be found here:

Stage #3 - Sunday, June 12th - The Butte City Road Race - 9:00AM:
This 36-Mile, all-flat, Road Race was used by the Chico Velo Cycling Club back in the early 1980s as part of the Chico Velo Omnium Bicycle Race. In fact, yours truly took the Junior title in this Road Race one year.....so, it's always been one of my favorites. ;) Registration will open at 8:30AM at Ord Bend Park on Ord Ferry Road(very near Hwy. 45). A FEW MORE RACE NOTES:
Most USA Cycling rules apply to these races - you know, WEAR YOUR HELMET, don't ride like a nutcase, and all that good stuff. Sandbaggers are strongly discouraged (a Sandbagger would be a Category "A" rider racing a Category "B" or "C" race - must be completely obvious to the Race Director). A mention about Tri Bars - You can have Tri Bars on your bicycle - BUT, you must NOT use them if you are in a pack or paceline during the Road Races! Normally, in a USA Cycling sanctioned race, you would not be allowed to have them on your bicycle in a mass-start event like the two road races in this Omnium - but I know many of us like them on our bicycles and use them for training. This isn't the World Championships - we do these races for fun, fitness and practice - but please do NOT use your Tri Bars in a pack/paceline situation.
