Rodney.....why in the heck are you torturing the riders???

As the Chairman of Annoyance, I get asked this question every so often. It's not that I want to torture the riders........although, they may think I do! ;) - I just want them to have a bit of fun out there! When I was a kid, I was very lucky to have grown up as a racing cyclist in Chico, and the very active cycling environment that was going on here. The Chico Velo Cycling Club, the Cascade Racing Team, the Chico State Racing Team, the Bidwell Wheelmen - all were very active in the local cycling community. Every Tuesday, we had either the Airport Criteriums or the Executive Park Criteriums(now that it's full of Executive Park buildings, we don't do that one anymore). Every Thursday, we had the River Road 10-Mile Time Trials. Weekends - if we weren't at a USCF race, we had good solid group rides on both days.........and rides every weekday at 3pm leaving from the One Mile Recreation Area. Even when we were training, we'd turn the rides into mini-races - who could be the first to the top of Honey Run or Humboldt Road.......who could win the sprint to the Stop Ahead sign or MPH sign.........holding a nice steady paceline at 23-26mph in Butte Creek Canyon. We would even practice criterium cornering & racing in parking lots just to get ready for the Airport Criteriums and the weekend races. And cyclocross on the singletrack and fire roads in Bidwell Park - that was just too much fun for words. And, in turn, all this riding developed us - we had quite a few riders who came out of this area who were pretty good!

So, no, I am not trying to torture y'all - I am just trying to provide you with a little bit of fun and a little bit of competition. Do the "local" events that you wanna do - don't do the ones that don't interest ya. But, all in all, we just do 'em to have a good time and work a bit on our cycling obsession.
