**** One Note About This Tuesday Night's Airport Criterium - August 18th - 7:00PM - will also have a Category "C" race going off at 7:00PM. The "C" race will be 20 minutes + 3 laps. If you are intimidated by the Criterium and/or the speeds out there, this is the Category to get a feel for what's going on without the crazy speeds. No other Category races will be on the course - just Category "C" - so you can get used to the course, etc. The event MAY be mentored as well, depending upon whether ANY Category "A" or highly-ranked Category "B" riders(basically, any top 10 riders in the Current Standings in the "B" Category) are available to mentor. A mentor basically sits in with your group during the race, giving you basic pointers and helpful advice to keep you safe, skilled and sound during the event - and for future events. Mentors must meet with me prior to the event - so, if you would like to volunteer to be a Criterium Mentor, see me at the race on Tuesday Night or e-mail me prior to the Event - mhtml:%7B8A03335F-1038-44F1-AB51-F598423C3329%7Dmid://00008931/!x-usc:mailto:lorrod7@comcast.net . Also - If anyone would like to donate Prime Prizes for any of the events, please bring them out to the Criterium or e-mail me.

Wednesday, August 19th - Humboldt Road Race - 6:00AM (3.4 miles and 751 feet of climbing - just an early morning leg burn!) - Beat the heat with this early morning ride up Humboldt! Registration will open at 5:45am at the bottom of Humboldt Road(right near Stilson Canyon Road), with the race starting promptly at 6:00AM. This will be a mass-start event for this short climb up Humboldt Road - starting near Stilson Canyon Road and finishing at the Stop Ahead Sign at the top of the hill. A map of this short-course Road Race can be found here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Humboldt-Road-Race-AM-Racing (Point event for the 2009 Chico Road R.A.C.E. Series)

Wednesday, August 19th - FAST 50 - 6:00PM
- The long-running independent "Fast 50" Wednesday night rides! The starting spot for this ride is in the parking lot of Rosedale Elementary School located at 100 Oak Street here in Chico. The ride leaves promptly at 6:00pm from the parking lot area. Many different levels of cyclists out there, so hook up with someone and enjoy the ride! A map of the course can be found here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Fast-50255824 Rain does not cancel!

Thursday, August 20th - River Road 10-Mile Time Trial - 6:00pm - 2nd Race Dog Days Omnium - Registration opens at 5:40pm, with the first rider going off at 6:01pm. We will go in 1-minute intervals for this 5-miles out, 5-miles back, all-flat Time Trial. This classic Chico Time Trial course has been used for the last 29+ years. Come on out after work and give this one a shot! An extremely rough draft of this course can be found here - http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/River-Road-10-Mile-TT-Course (yes, the course is really 10 miles, not 9.9). And if you look at the Elevation Profile......it might tell you why coming back always seems a bit tougher than going out! (Part of the 2009 Chico 10-Mile Time Trial Series!) (2nd Race Dog Days Omnium)

FRIDAY, August 21st - FRIDAY Night Airport Criterium - 6:00PM (As & Bs) & 7:00PM (Cs) - 3-Place Prime Night!!! Saturday, Aug. 22nd - Cohasset DOWNHILL Time Trial - 9:00AM - 3rd Race Dog Days Omnium - The 4th Annual Cohasset Downhill Time Trial is taking place this Saturday, August 22nd! This Downhill Time Trial starts just below the "Narrows" on Cohasset Road - look for me at registration at the top of the hill. Finish is at the 1st Rock Creek Road on the way down the hill. An approximation of the course can be found at Bikely.com here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Cohasset-Downhill-TT This course is approximately 4.9 miles in length and drops approximately 1,900 feet!! Top speeds on this descent have reached 50+ miles per hour. Registration for this event will start at 8:30am at the top of the hill(near the Narrows) - and we will NOT be weighing you this year! The 1st rider will go off at 9:01am, and we will go in 1-minute intervals. Also, Tandems are welcome!!!! This is also the 3rd Stage of this week's Dog Days Omnium!! (FINAL RACE in the 2009 Chico Downhill Time Trial Series) (3rd Race Dog Days Omnium)

Saturday, August 22nd - The "Kids ONLY" Humboldt Road Race - 1:00PM
- From the bottom of the climb up to the main Power Lines (it's about half-way up Humboldt = 2 miles up, 400 feet of total climbing!) - For the kids under the Age of 16 who have been showing up to the Chico Airport Criteriums - now's your chance to experience a ROAD RACE!! Well.....at least a little one!! Registration will open at the bottom of the hill (near the intersection of Humboldt Road & Stilson Canyon Road) at 12:40pm. The RACE will start at 1:00pm. This one is 2 miles long and climbs approximately 400 feet - so bring your climbing legs!! I will have water at the Start & Finish - and probably watermelon at the top too. We're going just up to the Power Lines - not all the way up to the top. MENTORS are STRONGLY encouraged to attend - to keep an eye on our riders, help them out and encourage them up the hill. I will also be there with the SAG Vehicle, if needed. ***One Note - If enough older kids show, we may do a race up to the top of Humboldt too, depending upon help & logistics. For a map of the "Kids Only" course, please visit: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/The-Humboldt-Kids-Road-Race . HELMETS ARE MANDATORY! Rain cancels!

Saturday, August 23rd - Table Mountain Road Race - 9:00AM - 1 Lap - Final Race Dog Days Omnium - This particular course was first used by the Chico Velo Cycling Club as a USCF RR course in 1984 during the Chico Omnium(which also included the 7-Mile Lane Time Trial and the Chico Downtown Criterium that year). Most groups did 2 laps of this course, but the Cat.1/2 guys did 3 or 4. However, I wouldn't do that to ya - we're only going to do 1 lap in this race - for a total of approximately 25 miles and approximately 2,100 feet of total climbing. (I wanted to make it just 1 lap too for those who ride out to the course and back to Chico - wouldn't wanna kill ya or anything!!) The course preview is located on Bikely.com here - and you can see the Course Profile by clicking on "Show" in the top left-hand corner........then clicking on "Elevation Profile": http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Old-Table-Mountain-Road-Race-Course
Like the Messilla Valley Circuit Race, this will have a Category "A" and a Category "B". The Start/Finish Line is located on Table Mountain Boulevard right by Table Mountain Ranch Road(see Bikely Map - this was the Start/Finish Line for the 1984 race as well - I'll be out there early, so look for the registration table). Each Category will do just 1 lap = 25 miles. Registration will open at 8:30AM with Category A going off at 9:00AM........and Category B going at 9:02AM. Women's Category will be scored separately. Parking is available on the unfinished freeway overpass at the Start/Finish Line.
****Now, a word of warning - This course goes in a clockwise direction - meaning that you will be climbing up to Cherokee from Hwy. 70. Although the hill does not seem quite as difficult as from the other side(the Wildflower Century side), the descent off Table Mountain will be quite tricky. Make certain that your bicycle is in good working order and that you are comfortable on technical descents. The Road Race course goes through amazingly diverse sections and is quite scenic - but please look out for one another and for yourselves, especially on the descent and on the Highway. All USCF rules apply, as usual - you know, don't do stupid stuff, wear a helmet, obey the centerline, etc. Route Arrows will mark the course as well. Bottle hand ups and Feed Zones will be solely dependent upon volunteers - Feed Zone is pretty much anywhere on the course. Sag vehicles will be solely dependent upon volunteers as well. I will be sweeping the course at the end as well - so if I don't see you back at the Finish, I'm coming to get you! (Part of the 2009 Chico Road R.A.C.E. Series!) (Final Race Dog Days Omnium)

Sunday, August 23rd - Chico Airport LONG-COURSE Criterium(using the 1-Mile course for this evening Criterium) - 6:00PM - 3-POINT EVERY LAP PRIME!! - We'll be using the "other" Criterium Course for this event - the 1-Mile Chico Airport Long-Course. Registration will open at 5:45pm for this one, with the Start at 6:00pm. The course Starts & Finishes on Marauder Street.......over by the old Koret building on the north end of the Airport. A map of this course can be found here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Airport-Criterium-Long-Course . This event DOES count towards the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series. NOTE: This Criterium will have a 3-point Prime to the winner of EACH LAP in EACH CATEGORY(As, Bs and Women's Categories) - so if you need to grab a few extra points for the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series, this might be the event to do it!!! This "other" course has a little elevation gain to it as well - not much, but just enough to feel it. Category "A" will go for 40 Minutes PLUS 3 laps(remember - the course is 1-mile in length). Category "B" will go for 35 Minutes PLUS 3 laps. HELMETS ARE MANDATORY! RAIN OR WET PAVEMENT WILL CANCEL THIS EVENT!! (Part of the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series!)

DOG DAYS OMNIUM DETAILS:

Hi Everyone! The 2nd Annual "Dog Days" Omnium bicycling event is coming up in Chico in August, in honor of the Dog Days of Summer:

Tues., Aug. 18th - Chico Airport Criterium - 1st Race "Dog Days" Omnium (Part of the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series - this is also a DOUBLE POINT EVENT!)

Thurs., Aug. 20th - River Road 10-Mile TT - 2nd Race Dog Days Omnium (Part of the 2009 Chico 10-Mile Time Trial Series)

Sat., Aug. 22nd - Cohasset DOWNHILL TT - 3rd Race Dog Days Omnium (Part of the 2009 Chico Downhill Time Trial Series)

Sun., Aug. 23rd - Table Mountain Road Race(1 lap) - Final Race Dog Days Omnium (Part of the 2009 Chico Road R.A.C.E. Series)

Essentially, this will be run similar to the Nutcracker Omnium taking place in September, but with a couple of different stages. Again, in this scenario, an Omnium is just a stage race using points rather than time. You garner points for each stage depending upon how you did in the stage.......and, again, in this case.........the MOST points wins(many Omniums reverse this and have the least amount of points winning). There WILL be a Category "A" and Category "B", and a Women's Category which is scored separately - you must tell me at the start which Category you are entering.......and no downgrades during the Omnium once you're in. Most USCF rules will apply to ALL stages - including WEAR YOUR HELMET, don't ride like a silly person, and so on and so forth. The Time Trials - In the Dog Days Omnium, aero equipment WILL be allowed(it is NOT allowed in the Nutcracker Omnium River Road Time Trial). And remember - the only reasons we're doing this Omnium is for fun and fitness......and maybe a little competitiveness too, but nothing over-the-top please! Ride safe, have fun, try something new and challenge yourself. Dog Days Omnium Champion Trophies will be awarded to the Winners of each Category - we may also have a Masters Category for Men & Women if the budget allows for it.

So.....with that said, here are the Point Breakdowns for each of the Stages of the upcoming Dog Days Omnium:

Tuesday, August 18th - Chico Airport Criterium:
1st = 25 points (NOT to be added to the season-long point standings in the Criterium Series....those points are separate from the Omnium. Prime Points NOT counted in the Overall Omnium Results.)
2nd = 20 points
3rd = 18 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 14 points
6th = 12 points
7th = 10 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 6 points
10th = 4 points
11th = 2 points
Everyone else = 1 point

Thursday, August 20th - River Road 10-Mile Time Trial:
1st = 25 points
2nd = 20 points
3rd = 18 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 14 points
6th = 12 points
7th = 10 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 6 points
10th = 4 points
11th = 2 points
Everyone else = 1 point

Saturday, August 22nd - Cohasset DOWNHILL Time Trial:
1st = 25 points
2nd = 20 points
3rd = 18 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 14 points
6th = 12 points
7th = 10 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 6 points
10th = 4 points
11th = 2 points
Everyone else = 1 point

Sunday, August 23rd - Table Mountain Road Race(1 Lap):
1st = 25 points
2nd = 20 points
3rd = 18 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 14 points
6th = 12 points
7th = 10 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 6 points
10th = 4 points
11th = 2 points
Everyone else = 1 point

And Finally - ANY rider participating in ALL 4 Stages receives an additional 25 points.
Do you have to do all the stages in order to compete in the Omnium?? No - you can even do just one event and your points will still be calculated and counted in the overall.
Tie-Breaker - If, by chance, it comes down to a TIE after the last stage of the Omnium, the highest placed finisher(of the tied competitors) in the Cohasset DOWNHILL Time Trial will be declared the Overall Winner.
