Okay, I admit it.......
.....I was a Fonsie fan - No, not the Fonzie from Happy Days......but Fons de Wolf of cycling fame! Okay, okay - so he wasn't that famous(he's the rider on the left here with Adri van der Poel from the DAF team and Stephen Roche from the Peugeot team). Actually, I was a fan of the Fons back in the day because of one funky thing he did on the bicycle in races - it was the way he gripped the brake hoods during solo & break attempts. He had this funky style of putting his thumb and index finger on one side of the brake hood and the other three fingers on the other side. Just drapped lightly over the top, elbows bent and forearms parallel to the ground. Looked rad. I use to ride in Bidwell Park over and over again here in Chico, jamming on the north side with that funky grip......and you know, I swear it made me go faster! No, it wasn't an aero thing......it was a mental thing. Don't know why.....just felt faster! Kinda like Greg LeMond's funky thumb thing when he was climbing - why in the world is that thumb sticking out so far Greg??? Who cares! He was fast on those hills!
Hey, whatever works........
